New CO2 Tax in Germany's road tolls

The road tolls for 2024 in Germany (Maut) are ready. This time they also contain CO2 emissions tax. The new toll rates are planned to be changed in December 2023 and July 2024.

With effect from December 1, 2023, the German Ministry of Transport has proposed a new toll charges system including a new partial tax rate for CO2 emissions related to road transport, as per the federal government's "Third Amendment to Road Toll Regulations" programme. The Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMDV) plans to increase the road tolls for large cargo vehicles by €200 per tonne of CO2 emissons as part of an agreement with the ruling coalition.

Currently, transportation companies travelling to or through Germany have to pay the tolls for infrastructure tax, noise tax and air pollution tax. With the new toll charges system, they will also have to pay additionally for CO2 emissions tax.

Vehicles over 3.5t will also need to pay for tolls starting July 01, 2024. The same toll system will be applied with all partials (infrastructure, noise pollution, air pollution, and the new CO2 emissions).

Changes in prices will be implemented from December 1st 2023.
