Deep Sea Market Update II | October 2026

Dear Customer,

As mentioned in our latest market update, several shipping lines have resumed sailing Asia–Europe routes through the Suez Canal.

At the same time, routing decisions are becoming less predictable, increasing the importance of ensuring that cargo insurance also covers transportation through areas of elevated risk.

Shipping lines determine the final sailing route based on operational and security considerations.

Ocean carriers have now informed us that we will no longer receive information about which route will be used. As a result, we are unable to advise which individual containers require specific insurance coverage due to transit through areas that are still classified as war-risk zones.

General Average – what does it mean?

If a serious incident occurs at sea, the shipping line may declare General Average. This means that costs incurred to safeguard the vessel and cargo may be shared among the parties with financial interests in the voyage.

This may result in costs for you as the cargo owner, even if your goods have not been damaged. It is therefore very important to have cargo insurance that provides appropriate coverage.

Our recommendation

Insure all deep-sea cargo on the assumption that the vessel may transit the Suez Canal to and from Europe. Contact your insurance company for guidance.
